The CIRMS annual meeting provides a public forum for discussion of radiation measurements and standards issues for stakeholders in industry, academia, and government. The technical program will consist of oral presentations, poster sessions, and working group sessions organized by the three subcommittees:

Parking & Shuttle Transportation
Parking:
$3/hr (Maximum $15/day) on Levels 2 - 6 of Traville Gateway Garage
**The ground floor of Traville Gateway Garage is designated as lot 4 and requires a USG employee permit at all times.**
Shuttle Transportation:
Shuttle service from the Hilton Garden Inn Rockville-Gaithersburg to The Universities at Shady Grove will be available each morning and at end of each day. All other transportation and parking for the conference are on your own.
Hotel to USG: Monday 8:15 am | Tuesday, Wednesday 8:30 am
USG to Hotel: Monday 5:15 pm | Tuesday 6:00 pm | Wednesday 12:15 pm

Optional Tours
Following the end of the formal meeting on Wednesday May 1st, there are two optional tours open to registered meeting attendees. All tour participants must be registered for the Annual Meeting and brining additional guest on the tour in not allowed. As the tours occur at the same time, you can only attend one. If you wish to attend one of the tours, please only sign up for one so we can save space for others who are interested. Deadline to sign up for the tours is April 19th.
NIST Tour:
Similar to last year, a tour of selected laboratories in the new Radiation Physics Building at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is available. The tour includes visits to several Radiation Physics labs and there are 30 spots available. The tours are scheduled from 1 - 4 PM and you will not be able to leave the tour early. Attendees are responsible for their own transportation and will need an ID for the front gate.
You do not need an account to sign up - "Sign In" with your email address. Make sure to include your full name in the sign up, including any names that appear on your ID as well as any middle names you may have.
AFRRI Tour:
New this year is a tour of selected facilities at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) and there are 13 spots available. An AFRRI van will pick up the tour participants from the Universities at Shady Grove at 1 PM and will return the participants back to the same location at 3 PM. You will not be able to leave the tour early and you will not be able to drive yourself to this tour. Due to AFRRI regulations, this tour is only available to US citizens and Green Card holders. You will need a government-issued ID for the front gate.
You do not need an account to sign up - "Sign In" with your email address. make sure to include your full name in the sign up and make sure it exactly matches what is shown on your ID. AFRRI will need some additional information from the tour attendees; after April 19th we will be in contact with everyone who signed up for this tour to collect this information
Submissions for CIRMS Meeting
Abstract Submission
Submission Deadline: March 22, 2024 Final Extension CLOSED
Submit by January 16, 2024 for best consideration for an oral presentation
We invite you to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation. Submitted abstracts will undergo peer review coordinated by the Executive Committee Members. Authors will be notified of acceptance and will be required to register for the conference. Abstracts should not exceed 350 words and should be created using the general abstract template.
Please email the abstracts to abstracts@cirms.org with the subject line “CIRMS 2024 Abstract: [Name of Corresponding Author].” In your email please indicate your preference for an oral or poster presentation. If your abstract is not accepted for an oral presentation it will automatically be considered for a poster presentation.
If you receive a poster presentation slot for your abstract submission, you will be offered the chance to give a short 3-minute Blitz Oral on your poster as well.
Junior Investigator Competition
Submission Deadline: March 22, 2024 Final Extension CLOSED
Young investigators are invited to submit an extended abstract/essay describing their original research and its relevance to the CIRMS mission. The essays will be scored by members of the CIRMS Executive Committee and the Caswell Fellows. All qualifying essays will have a poster at the meeting and will present a short 3-minute Blitz Oral on their poster as well. Some abstracts may even be selected for a full-length oral presentation. The authors of the top-three scoring essays presented (poster or oral) at the meeting will receive a $500 cash prize. All authors will be notified of acceptance and will be required to register and attend the conference. Awards will be announced at the conference, typically on the last day of the meeting.
Eligibility: The program is open to any student or trainee from high school through postgraduate (i.e. within one year of terminal master’s or doctoral degree) with relevant original research to present at the meeting. All candidates must also register for the CIRMS meeting.
This means that at the time of abstract submission one of the following must be true. You must be:
*a student in a high school or undergraduate program, OR
*a student in a graduate program (i.e. pursuing a master's or doctoral degree in a relevant field), OR
*a graduate from a master's program, within one-year post-graduation (i.e. graduated December 2022 or later), OR
*a graduate from a doctoral program, within one-year post-graduation (i.e. graduated December 2022 or later), OR
*a postdoctoral fellow, within one-year post-graduation (i.e. graduated December 2022 or later)
Instructions: Essays should not exceed 1000 words and should be created using the junior investigator essay template. Please email the essays to abstracts@cirms.org with the subject line “CIRMS 2024 JI Award: [Name of Corresponding Author]." Only one submission from each Junior Investigator can be submitted for consideration. All candidates must also register for the CIRMS meeting. Radiation Technology Essay Competition
**Open to Universities at Shady Grove Students Only**
Submission Deadline: March 22, 2024 Final Extension CLOSED
For our 2024 meeting we are hosting a Radiation Technology Essay Competition to encourage greater participation in our meeting by Universities at Shady Grove (USG) students. For this first we year are only inviting USG students to participate in this competition. USG students are invited to submit a 500-word essay describing their literature research on a technology or process of their choice involving the use or detection of ionizing radiation.
The essays should include:
1) background information and technical aspects of the technology or process
2) the type of ionizing radiation applied or detected
3) the societal benefit of the technology or process.
Examples could include, but are not limited to, proton therapy accelerators for treatment of cancer, gamma-ray irradiators for food or blood sterilization, and radiation portal monitors for detecting illicit materials in vehicles and cargo. The list of radiation technologies or process is limitless and we encourage applicants to be creative in their choice (see list of suggested topics). In addition to the essay, the students will also present their work in poster format during our poster session scheduled for Day 1 of the conference, and will be offered the chance to also give a short 3-minute Blitz Oral on their topic as well. The essays and poster presentations will be scored by a team of experts and the two top-scoring presenters will receive a $200 cash prize.
Eligibility: The program is open to any student attending classes at any of the Universities at Shady Grove campus.
Instructions: Essays should be between 500 and 1000 words. Please email the essays to abstracts@cirms.org with the subject line “CIRMS 2024 Technology Essay: [Name of Corresponding Author]." Posters should be 48'' width and 36'' height. You can use this MS PowerPoint poster template as a guide for formatting your poster. Posters can be printed at the USG print shop for small fee. All applicants must also register for the CIRMS meeting. Registration is FREE for USG students, but you still must submit the registration form. Use the provided coupon code to make the registration FREE. All awards will be announced at the meeting on Day 3 (May 1). Contact us at abstracts@cirms.org if you have any questions.
This is an example essay and example poster on the topic of "Proton Therapy". While we encourage you to be creative on the topic you select, we provide this list of suggested topics as a courtesy.
